Happier US metropolitan areas revealed

If you are looking to move to a happy place, you may want to check the north of Puerto Sarasota-Bradenton, Florida area: The region reported the highest well-being of the 100 most populous communities in the country according to a new survey.

The five happiest metropolitan areas also included urban Honolulu, Hawaii; Raleigh, North Carolina; Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura, California; and El Paso, Texas, according to the Index wellness Gallup-Healthways, a measure based on factors such as feelings of purpose and physical health.

Metropolitan areas with the lowest score being were Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, Ohio and Pennsylvania; Toledo, Ohio; and Knoxville, Tennessee, according to the survey. From January to December 2014, Gallup-Healthways researchers conducted telephone interviews with a random sample of more than 176,000 adults living in metropolitan areas in 50 states and the District of Columbia. These areas were defined by the Office of Management and Budget.

Welfare has been calculated on a scale from 0 to 100 (where 0 represents the lowest possible welfare and 100 representing the highest).
